Since August 2017, it is strictly forbidden to produce, sell or use single-use plastic bags in Kenya. With penalties up to 4 years in prison or $40.000, Kenya has the world's toughest ban on plastic bags. As explained in a Reuters 2017 article, here's why Kenya takes the ban very seriously:
"Many bags drift into the ocean, strangling turtles, suffocating seabirds and filling the stomachs of dolphins and whales with waste until they die of starvation."
"In Nairobi’s slaughterhouses, some cows destined for human consumption had 20 bags removed from their stomachs."
